Getting married in Cyprus
Cyprus is the easiest place in the Mediterranean for UK couples to marry with full legal standing — the law is modelled on England's and the town halls process thousands of British weddings a year. Here is the entire process, step by step.

The process
Five steps from London to legally wed
- 1
Choose your municipality & date
Civil marriages are conducted by the town halls (municipalities) — Paphos, Geroskipou, Peyia, Paralimni, Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Limassol and others. In practice your venue books the officiant and ceremony slot with its local municipality when you confirm the wedding date, so this step usually happens through the hotel or planner.
- 2
Gather your documents at home
Before you fly, assemble: valid passports, full birth certificates, and evidence you're free to marry — a Certificate of No Impediment from your local register office or a sworn declaration, depending on what your municipality accepts (they'll confirm which). Divorced? Add your decree absolute. Widowed? The death certificate and previous marriage certificate. Changed your name? The deed poll.
- 3
File the Notice of Marriage in Cyprus
You attend the municipal office in person, typically 2–3 working days before the ceremony, to file notice and pay the fee. The standard route allows marriage from 15 days after notice; virtually all destination couples instead pay for the special licence (around €280 versus €130 standard), which permits marriage within days, on the same trip.
- 4
The ceremony
The marriage officer conducts the civil ceremony at your licensed venue — gazebo, jetty, lawn or town hall. You need two witnesses (any adults, including your guests). Rings optional, vows short and civil; most couples layer their own readings and music around the legal core. The ceremony itself takes 20–30 minutes.
- 5
Certificates & recognition
You receive your marriage certificate after the ceremony — order two or three certified copies while at the office. A Cyprus marriage is legally valid in the UK without re-registration; for dealings abroad an apostille stamp can be added in Cyprus. Back home, update passports, banks and HMRC exactly as after a UK wedding.
Timing: the special licence is the destination couple's route
Cyprus law offers two clocks. File standard notice and you can marry from 15 dayslater, workable only if you're on the island that long. Or pay the special licence fee (~€280) and marry within days of filing, which is why the classic destination timeline works: land Monday, town hall Tuesday, marry Thursday or Friday. The licence is routine, not an exception; municipalities issue them all season.
Two planning notes earn their place here. First, town halls work Monday to Friday, so build your paperwork appointment around weekends and Cypriot public holidays, and remember August 15th shuts much of the island. Second, your ceremony slot and your paperwork slot are separate bookings: venues arrange both, but confirm both are locked before booking forty flights. Questions
The legal questions every couple asks
Is a Cyprus marriage legally recognised in the UK?
Yes, fully. A civil marriage in Cyprus is valid in the UK and internationally — you do not remarry or re-register at home. Cyprus's English-modelled marriage law is precisely why it became the Mediterranean's favourite legal-wedding destination for British couples.
How many days do we need in Cyprus before the wedding?
Two to three working days covers the municipality appointment comfortably. Most couples arrive four or five days ahead to handle paperwork early, meet their coordinator and suppliers, and start the holiday before the main event.
What does it cost to legally marry in Cyprus?
Municipality fees are approximately €130 for the standard notice route or around €280 for the special licence most destination couples use. Certified certificate copies cost a few euros each. Confirm exact current fees with your municipality — they adjust periodically.
Do we need a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)?
Municipalities accept either a CNI from your UK register office or a sworn declaration that you're free to marry — practice varies by town hall, so confirm which yours requires before travelling. Your venue coordinator or planner deals with this weekly and will tell you exactly.
Can same-sex couples marry in Cyprus?
Cyprus offers civil unions for same-sex couples rather than marriage. A Cyprus civil union is recognised in the UK as a civil partnership. Same-sex couples wanting a marriage certificate typically hold the legal step at home and a full ceremony celebration in Cyprus.
Can we have a church wedding instead?
Yes — Cyprus hosts Anglican and Catholic ceremonies for visiting couples at churches and licensed venues, usually paired with the civil paperwork. Orthodox church weddings require at least one partner to be Orthodox. Many couples simply add a blessing to their civil ceremony.
